Frank’s Famous Hot Dogs
was founded by Don Krall, Frank Gimbel, and Max Eggert in 1977 at the corner of
Broad & Chorro Street in San Luis Obispo.
Starting in 1979, Frank’s was solely owned by Don Krall and his wife
Lorene for many years. Then in 1988, Don and his son moved Frank’s to the
corner of Monterey and California Street where it is still located. In 2007,
the Kralls sold the establishment to Toney and Stephanie Breault who continue
to own and operate the restaurant today. Frank’s holds a reputation in San Luis
Obispo for having great hot dogs and its hard not to have this reputation when
in the name of the establishment is “Famous Hot Dogs”. In addition to the name,
Frank’s has a slogan of “big weenies are better”. I for one would like to
disagree with their slogan, by arguing that small weenies can provide the same
satisfaction as big weenies once they are given the opportunity to prove themselves. I mean, it wasn’t the small weenie’s choice to be small; all it can do is just try to compensate its size with creativity and stamina. And besides, everyone knows that big weenies are too filling, and that no one wants to feel that
stuffed. However, that is just my opinion, and I do not claim to be a weenie
expert, just ask any of my ex’s and they will tell you how wrong I am. In
addition to Frank’s reputation for having famous weenies, they are also well
known in the city for having a good breakfast burrito.
I have longly anticipated my official visit to Franks because many people who know of my true identity always ask me if I have tried Frank’s breakfast burrito because it is their favorite. To these people I have two things to tell them: of course I have had Frank’s I take my title as the Official San Luis Obispo Breakfast Burrito Blogger® seriously, and secondly, what do you know, are you a registered breakfast burrito blogger? On this particular visit to Franks, I was joined by my Cuties Shannon, Sarah, and Daniel. While Daniel held a table for us outside, Shannon, Sarah, and I went inside Franks to order our breakfast. Frank’s breakfast burritos are sold all day long and are priced at $6.95 before tax. In the breakfast burrito, it is stuffed with two eggs, two pieces of bacon, cheddar cheese, home fries, tomatoes, onions, mayo, salsa, and all wrapped up in a big flour tortilla. After reading the description, my mouth was salivating for I haven’t ate in over 30 minutes. Although the description made my burrito boner rise, not everyone in our party was equally aroused. Shannon who is vegetarian wasn’t as happy to see that the burrito had bacon in it (don’t ask why I hang out with a vegetarian, I swear didn’t know about her condition). I am happy to say that Frank’s nicely commendated Shannon with her food restrictions by replacing the bacon in her burrito with avocado ( If I would have known about this before I ordered, I woulda put avocado in my burrito with bacon, cause avocado makes everything better).
After ordering, the three of us rejoined Daniel outside who heroically saved the table for us (although half the tables were empty). The four of us got to talking and next thing we knew our food was delivered to us, and that was when I realized that someone worse than a vegetarian has infiltrated my close friend group. All four of us went to Frank’s to order breakfast burritos, but yet when the waiter brought out our food, there were only three breakfast burritos, and one French toast. Sarah Wong - daughter of Kathy and Gordan Wong - ordered French toast instead of a breakfast burrito. I was so upset with her that I demanded to try a bite of her French toast. It did not compare to the warm familiar sensation that o nly a breakfast burrito could provide.
Frank’s breakfast burrito was a well-rounded burrito that satisfied my taste buds. Some highlights of the burrito were the delicious bacon and potatoes that complimented each other. Overall it was a high quality burrito, but I feel as though it was hyped up for me, and I am also curious about how much better it would have been with avocado in it. Next time I will ask to get avocado in my burrito, but until then I rate Frank’s at 4/5 for taste, a 3/5 for atmosphere, and a 4.5/5 for price.
Sincerely,
Betrayed San Luis Obispo Breakfast Burrito Blogger
